Earl's Restaurants Ltd. has a chain of 50 locations in the four western Canadian provinces, Denver and Scottsdale, Ariz. Of those, 35 are company owned and 15 operated on a franchise basis. Franchise owners tend to be former Earl's managers looking for a slower paced life in a small town, Mr. Fuller says.
The typical Earl's is a 7,000-square-foot premises, seating 220 people in a high traffic area, often in a downtown location. The target market ranges in age from 25 to 60, men and women who have a taste for fresh ingredients prepared with an international zest. Each Earl's averages one complete seating at lunch and two during evening hours.
So who exactly is Earl?
Is he a real person? Is he a vegetable? A mineral? Well, he is definitely a real person. And Earl is his real name. He's Leroy Earl Fuller. Earl loves two things. Food and people. So it's no surprise that in 1954 he opened his very first restaurant to feed local farmers of Sunburst, Montana. No, it wasn't an earls restaurant, but he was on his way.
In 1982, the first casual dining earls restaurant opened in Edmonton, Alberta. We were off and running! Over 20 years later, we now have 50 earls restaurants throughout Western Canada, Arizona and Colorado. And Earl is still with us as Chairman of Earls Restaurants Ltd.
